Press Releases

(3/22/20) Notice From Executive Director:
PGA Professionals,

On behalf of the Officers, Board of Directors and Staff we wanted to share a few updates with you regarding the Executive Order which was announced by Governor Murphy yesterday, Saturday March 21st. While golf courses were not specifically spelled out in the order which can be read in full HERE, we have been informed that the order "does not make an exception for golf courses to be open for play." Communication has gone out to the NJGCSA as well as the NJCMA, both indicating courses should be closed all together. If closed, facilities are still entitled to maintain their assets, which include the golf course, but the State will not provide direction regarding what employees are deemed essential to each respective facility, that will be the responsibility of each individual facility.

We would also like to thank everyone who took the time to complete the COVID-19 Golf Operations Survey which was shared a few days ago. Nearly 80 facilities provided data and all of the individual responses are attached for your reference. As we all know, circumstances change by the hours and a majority of the surveys were completed prior to yesterday's order so please keep that in mind as you view the results.

Looking ahead, we want to ensure all of our PGA Professionals are aware of other actions that can be taken in the short term while local and national Allied Associations continue to work to request that Golf Courses be permitted to remain open in a manner that is safe with proper cleaning and social distancing parameters in place.

1. Some PGA Professionals have been added to the maintenance staff so they can continue working in some capacity and remain on payroll.
2. Some clubs have started a GoFundMe page which members may contribute to so they can continue to pay employees or provide an equal payment to those not working while the Executive Order is in place.
3. Employees who are let go or have had their start date delayed can move forward with unemployment and you can APPLY HERE
4. Small businesses, such as golf clubs, may be able to qualify for funds through a bill that is making its way through congress that will make most businesses whole by providing reimbursement or tax credits to those small businesses who continue to pay employees. (We are still working to find out more details on this and hope it would provide some ease to our PGA Professionals, General Managers, facilities, etc. once it can be confirmed that a majority of golf courses/clubs would be eligible)

Moving forward, all Section staff members will operate remotely. All of their contact information and direct lines are below for your convenience

1. Chris Bauer, 732-374-9852, cbauer@pgahq.com
2. Chris Hunt, 732-670-5763, chunt@pgahq.com
3. Mark Dharte, 732-573-4666, mdharte@pgahq.com
4. Greg Zohovetz, 732-573-6911, gzohovetz@pgahq.com
5. Christina Paulsen, 732-640-8779cpaulsen@pgahq.com
6. Dave Miller, 732-465-1212, dmiller@pgahq.com

Finally, due to the Executive Order that is currently in place, all New Jersey Section Tournaments, Seminars and Junior Golf Events will be postponed until further notice. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact myself, our staff or the Board of Directors.

All the Best,
Chris Bauer | Executive Director

(3/19/20) Notice From Executive Director:
Dear PGA Professional,

As we continue to work through the challenges we are all faced with, it is our hope to provide our PGA Professionals with a database of facilities and the services that are still being provided as well as any protocols that have been put into place. Different from the Compensation Survey where no individual responses are ever shared, we would specifically list out each facility with details about their specific operations so as you get questions from your General Manager, Board of Directors, owners, etc. about what other area Clubs are doing, you could provide specifics from each facility. As mentioned above, this email is only being sent to the highest ranking PGA Member at each facility so it would be greatly appreciated if you can take a few minutes to complete. In appreciation for your time, you will receive 1 MSR credit for completing. We will consolidate all of the responses into a summary and distribute back to this group as well as share the results on the New Jersey PGA website as early as Monday. Thank you again and do not hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have or help you may need.

(3/16/20) Notice From Executive Director:
  • Good Afternoon PGA Professionals,

As we all continue to work through a challenging environment to start the season, I wanted to make you aware of some modifications to our Section office operations. Beginning tomorrow, March 17th, the Section office will remain open with a maximum of two employees in the office each day. Other employees will continue to work remotely using technology that will allow them to continue to provide a high level of customer service to you, our PGA Professionals, as well as our loyal sponsors, Junior Tour members and Foundation supporters alike.

All staff will begin communicating with facilities scheduled to host Section, Junior Golf or Foundation events over the next few months to gather information such as course availability, food & beverage availability, starting time flexibility and/or potential dates to reschedule.

We will continue to monitor updates from the CDC, WHO, State of New Jersey and other local and national agencies and communicate with each of  you as more & more relevant information becomes available. We will continue to make decisions as necessary and appreciate everyone's patience through these extraordinary times.

Sincerely,

Chris Bauer | Executive Director

(3/16/20) Notice from the PGA of America HQ:

PGA PROFESSIONALS, THEIR FACILITIES AND THE GOLF INDUSTRY
PGA HQ staff will be operating remotely effective Monday; while Valhalla and PGA Golf Club remain open to the public. We also provided a set of common-sense recommendations for consideration by operators. We have committed to keeping PGA Professionals up-to-date through “Five Things to Know” and PGA.org on a regular basis. From an MSR and education perspective, please note the following:

  • -MSR Cycle – Extend the MSR cycle deadline from June 15, 2021 to June 15, 2022, for all Members. This is due to a number of MSR activity opportunities – meetings, education, tournaments, player development – that could be postponed or canceled. Additionally, this relieves pressure on Sections and Members to conduct or take part in these activities during this unprecedented time of uncertainty.
  • -Acceptable Progress – Extend the Acceptable Progress deadlines of all PGA Associates by one year. As travel to the PGA Education Center is currently curtailed, PGA Education staff is exploring online opportunities. With uncertainty of testing sites remaining open, this provides flexibility with regard to Associates meeting their deadlines.
  • -PGA Golf Management University Students – 14 of our 18 GMU’s have currently cancelled classes and have moved to online delivery.  PGA Education Staff will work with the universities directly in regard to needed accommodations within the Criteria and Standards.
  • -PGA Associates – We have cancelled pending seminars at Port St. Lucie through April. 81 individuals were impacted and we are refunding everyone’s registration fee and charging them back at a discounted rate. The team is looking into online options that could be adopted in the future. Teaching & coaching and Executive Management is offered on a quarterly basis and therefore have not been impacted.

  • (3/13/20) Notice from New Jersey Section Officers, Board of Directors, & Staff:
  • Good Afternoon PGA Professionals,

As are each and every one of you, your Section staff, Officers and Board of Directors are continually monitoring new developments as they arise regarding the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic. We will be adhering to the advice of local, national and international health agencies including the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to guide us in our decision-making process.

At this time, the Spring Meeting which was scheduled for March 25th at Fiddler’s Elbow has been cancelled. Our staff and Board of Directors are finalizing Committee reports and will provide an update to the entire membership following our Board Meeting next week.

With regards to Section Tournaments and Educational Events, at this time no changes have been made and we will move forward as scheduled beginning with the Pro Pro Championship on April 6th and 7th. We are working on contingencies should a postponement be made as well as adjustments to the schedule of events that would eliminate large gatherings such as a cocktail hour, continental breakfast or buffet lunch.

Finally, with regards to Junior Golf activities, at this time no changes have been made and we will move forward as scheduled beginning with our first Spring Junior Tour Event on April 18th.

As stated earlier, this is all unfolding in front of us and the length of time it will take to move forward in a safe and healthy environment is unknown. We will continue to monitor new developments and make further adjustments to the schedule when necessary. Thank you all for your patience and understanding through these extraordinary times.

    Sincerely,

New Jersey Section Officers, Board of Directors and Staff
